Emerging esports-focused operator aligns with leading brands to influence policy and promote integrity in online wagering
Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA), the leading industry body representing Australia’s licensed online wagering providers, has welcomed Picklebet as its newest member. The move strengthens RWA’s footprint in the rapidly growing esports betting sector and underscores the organisation’s push for industry-wide alignment on regulatory reform, responsible gambling, and consumer protection.
Esports Meets Policy: A Strategic Alliance
Founded in 2020, Picklebet has grown to over 100 employees, carving a niche in the Australian market with its esports-first approach. By joining RWA, Picklebet joins major operators such as bet365, Betfair, PointsBet, Sportsbet, and Unibet, positioning itself as not only a digital disruptor but also a responsible industry participant.
CEO Nick Heaney of Picklebet explained the company’s reasoning: “We built Picklebet with a focus on innovation, but also with a strong sense of responsibility to do things right. Being part of RWA gives us a voice in shaping the future of the industry.”
This is a notable step as esports betting continues to gain popularity among younger demographics, often raising concerns about player protection and underage gambling. Picklebet’s membership signals a willingness to operate under the same standards applied to legacy operators and participate in broader conversations around digital risk and regulation.
RWA’s Growing Role in Regulatory Advocacy
RWA CEO Kai Cantwell welcomed Picklebet’s inclusion, stating, “Picklebet brings a fresh and innovative perspective, and we look forward to working closely to support a well-regulated, responsible, and sustainable industry.”
The announcement comes amid tensions between RWA and the Northern Territory Government, following the latter’s May 2025 decision to double the annual tax cap on licensed bookmakers. RWA condemned the decision for lacking industry consultation and warned it may drive business away from the NT, traditionally a hub for Australian betting operators.
With Picklebet now on board, RWA further consolidates its representation of the licensed market, reinforcing its status as a critical stakeholder in Australia’s gambling policy ecosystem. The expanded membership enhances RWA’s ability to advocate for a uniform national regulatory framework, particularly as federal discussions around racing industry contributions and tax harmonisation continue.
A Step Toward Unified Safer Gambling Standards
Picklebet’s onboarding also aligns with RWA’s mission to promote harm minimisation and consumer safeguards. RWA members adhere to strict standards around advertising, bet limits, self-exclusion tools, and intervention mechanisms—policies that are becoming increasingly essential as the lines blur between gaming and wagering, particularly in esports.
As Australia’s wagering industry continues to evolve, partnerships like this one help bridge the gap between innovation and responsibility. RWA’s integration of newer, digital-native operators like Picklebet ensures that even the most cutting-edge platforms are held to the same high standards of integrity, transparency, and consumer care as long-established firms.
In a fragmented regulatory environment, such unity may be key to future-proofing the industry while maintaining public trust.
