Colombo’s first integrated resort aims to redefine South Asia’s luxury gaming and tourism sector
A Landmark Opening for Sri Lanka’s Gaming Industry
The City of Dreams resort in Colombo is preparing for a grand opening on 2 August 2025, positioning itself as South Asia’s first integrated casino and entertainment resort. Developed through a collaboration between Nuwa Hotel and Melco Resorts & Entertainment, the project signals Sri Lanka’s ambition to become a regional hub for luxury tourism and high-stakes gaming.
Over 400 gamblers are expected to attend the launch, with a significant portion traveling from India, alongside guests from Thailand, the Philippines, and Macau.
High-Profile Entertainment: Hrithik Roshan to Headline
Initially, the event was set to feature Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. However, Khan withdrew from the appearance, with sources citing religious sensitivities regarding gambling. Organisers quickly confirmed Hrithik Roshan as the replacement headliner, ensuring that the entertainment factor remains strong.
Unlike with Khan’s participation, organisers have imposed no restrictions on live broadcasts of Roshan’s performance, reflecting a shift in approach to media visibility for the event.
Controversy Over ‘Other Services’ Classification
Reports have surfaced that around 150 women are being flown in from India, Thailand, the Philippines, and Hong Kong under the label of “other services.” This classification has raised questions about the nature of their involvement, drawing scrutiny from local media and watchdog groups.
Boosting Sri Lanka’s Tourism Recovery
The launch of City of Dreams comes at a pivotal time for Sri Lanka, which is working to revive its economy following years of financial crisis. By attracting high-spending visitors, the resort aims to inject much-needed foreign currency into the country’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The resort’s success could place Colombo on the map as a premier gaming destination in South Asia, potentially rivaling established markets like Macau and Singapore.
Outlook: A New Chapter for Regional Gaming
With its international guest list, celebrity performances, and world-class facilities, City of Dreams Colombo represents a bold step forward for Sri Lanka. However, the mix of glamour and controversy highlights the challenges that accompany such high-profile ventures. The coming months will reveal whether this landmark project can truly deliver on its promise of transforming Sri Lanka’s entertainment and tourism landscape.
