The Zimbabwe Lotteries and Gaming Board (LGB) used the high-profile platform of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) to intensify its campaign for responsible gambling, spotlighting the growing need to protect players and communities in the country’s expanding gaming sector.
The ZITF, Zimbabwe’s premier multi-sector trade exhibition, provided a unique opportunity for the regulator to engage directly with the public, stakeholders, and private operators on the social and regulatory responsibilities tied to gambling activities.
Educating the Public on Risks and Safe Practices
At the event, the LGB distributed educational materials, conducted interactive sessions, and hosted seminars aimed at promoting awareness around the potential harms of gambling. These included information on identifying early signs of problem gambling, financial literacy, and the importance of setting personal limits.
Board representatives emphasized that while gambling is a form of entertainment and economic activity, it must be regulated and consumed responsibly to avoid negative social impacts such as addiction, debt, and family breakdowns.
Growth of the Sector Raises Urgency
Zimbabwe’s gaming and betting sector has witnessed substantial growth in recent years, driven by the rise of mobile betting, lotteries, and online platforms. While this has contributed positively to state revenue and employment, it has also prompted concern about increased vulnerability among youth and low-income gamblers.
The LGB reaffirmed its intention to tighten regulatory oversight, including licensing standards, advertising rules, and mandatory responsible gambling policies for all licensed operators.
A Forward-Looking Regulatory Approach
As Zimbabwe continues to modernize its gambling industry, initiatives like the LGB’s ZITF campaign signal a proactive and public-facing approach to governance. The board’s efforts align with global trends that emphasize harm minimization, transparency, and sustainability in gaming ecosystems.
The LGB’s participation at ZITF not only highlights its regulatory role but also sets the tone for collaborative industry engagement toward safer gambling environments in Zimbabwe.
