The North West Gambling Board and DEDECT have joined forces to educate residents of Khunwana Village on responsible gambling, the dangers of illegal gambling and the importance of protecting consumers.
The North West Gambling Board (NWGB), in collaboration with the Liquor Regulators and Consumer Affairs Unit, has taken its responsible gambling and consumer education efforts to Khunwana Village in the Tswaing Local Municipality.
The educational awareness campaign formed part of the Thuntsa Lerole build-up campaigns, providing an opportunity for officials to engage directly with members of the community on important issues surrounding gambling and consumer protection.
The initiative focused on helping residents better understand the importance of gambling responsibly while also highlighting the risks associated with participating in illegal gambling activities.
Promoting Responsible Gambling
During the community engagement, NWGB officials provided residents with information on responsible gambling and encouraged members of the public to approach gambling with caution.
Residents were reminded that gambling should only be undertaken with money they can afford to lose. Officials also encouraged individuals to establish personal gambling limits and remain within those limits.
Another key message delivered during the campaign was the importance of avoiding the practice of chasing gambling losses.
Chasing losses occurs when individuals continue gambling in an attempt to recover money they have already lost. This can potentially lead to further financial losses and can make it difficult for individuals to maintain control over their gambling activities.
By encouraging residents to set boundaries and remain conscious of their spending, the campaign sought to promote a more responsible approach to gambling within the community.
Warning Against Illegal Gambling
The awareness campaign also placed significant emphasis on the dangers of illegal gambling operations.
The NWGB urged members of the public to stay away from gambling activities conducted at illegal or unlicensed gambling sites. Such operations function outside the legal regulatory framework and do not provide the protections associated with licensed gambling establishments.
Residents were specifically informed that people who choose to gamble at unlicensed operations are not protected by law.
The warning forms part of the Board’s broader efforts to address illegal gambling and encourage communities to recognise and avoid operations that do not comply with the applicable regulatory requirements.
Illegal gambling can also undermine the regulated gambling environment by allowing operators to conduct activities without the oversight and consumer safeguards expected of legitimate gambling businesses.
Community Members Encouraged to Report Illegal Operations
The NWGB also called on members of the public to play an active role in combating illegal gambling activities.
Residents were encouraged to report suspected illegal gambling operations to the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the North West Gambling Board, Mr Boitumelo Qalinge.
The appeal reflects the importance of cooperation between regulators and communities in identifying gambling activities that operate outside the law.
Community awareness can play an important role in supporting regulatory efforts, particularly when residents are equipped with information about responsible gambling and understand the risks associated with illegal operators.
Continuing the Awareness Effort
The Khunwana Village campaign demonstrates the NWGB’s continued focus on taking gambling education directly into communities.
Through initiatives such as the Thuntsa Lerole build-up campaigns, the Board is able to engage residents on responsible gambling practices while drawing attention to consumer protection and the risks of illegal gambling.
The campaign’s message was ultimately centred on two important principles: individuals should gamble responsibly and within their financial means, while communities should avoid and report illegal gambling operations.
As the NWGB continues its awareness activities, public participation and cooperation remain important components of efforts to promote a safer and more responsible gambling environment across the North West.
The engagement in Khunwana Village therefore represents another community-level effort to ensure that residents have access to information that can help them make informed decisions about gambling and recognise the importance of operating within the legal and regulated gambling environment.
