French Gambling Sector Hits Historic Highs in 2024
France’s gambling industry recorded unprecedented growth in 2024, driven primarily by a boom in sports betting, according to the latest figures released by the country’s gambling regulator, Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ). The total gross gaming revenue (GGR) soared to €14 billion — marking a record-breaking performance and reaffirming the sector’s resilience and adaptability.
Sports Betting Sees Explosive Rise
The standout performer was undoubtedly sports betting. The vertical generated €1.5 billion in GGR, reflecting a double-digit year-on-year increase. Analysts attribute this surge to a series of major international sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, UEFA Euro 2024 build-up, and the Rugby World Cup, all of which captured the attention of French bettors. Enhanced mobile betting platforms and in-play wagering options further fuelled engagement, particularly among younger demographics.
Online Gambling Expands Its Reach
Online gambling also played a critical role in the sector’s growth. The ANJ reported that digital gaming channels—comprising online sports betting, poker, and casino-style games—accounted for more than 30% of the overall market revenue. This reflects an increasing trend among French consumers towards mobile-friendly, accessible gaming options, amplified by operators’ investment in user experience and responsible gambling measures.
Regulatory Oversight and Market Maturity
Experts note that France’s well-established regulatory framework has been instrumental in sustaining industry expansion while safeguarding players. The ANJ’s continuous focus on advertising standards, player protection tools, and anti-money laundering initiatives has created a balanced environment where market growth coexists with responsible practices.
With sports betting leading the charge and online platforms expanding their foothold, the French gambling industry appears poised for sustained momentum in 2025—potentially bolstered by upcoming events like the Paris 2024 Olympics.
