Strong Revenue Growth in Q1
Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN) posted $642.6 million in net revenue for Q1 2025, marking a 9% year-over-year increase. The growth was fueled primarily by its Live and Historical Racing segment, which brought in $272.5 million, and the Gaming segment, which contributed $263.2 million.
Net Income Declines Amid Rising Costs
Despite record revenue, the company saw a 5% drop in net income, falling to $76.7 million from $80.4 million in Q1 2024. Rising labor expenses and regional market challenges were cited as key factors. Diluted earnings per share dropped from $1.08 to $1.02.
Adjusted EBITDA Holds Steady
Adjusted EBITDA came in at $245.1 million, reflecting a modest 1% year-over-year increase. While operating margins remained strong, the slower growth pace indicates tighter cost controls and economic pressures.
Owensboro Expansion Enhances Regional Footprint
Churchill Downs opened its new Owensboro Racing and Gaming venue in Western Kentucky during the quarter. The site includes 600 historical racing machines, simulcast betting, a sportsbook, and dining facilities, further solidifying its presence in the regional gaming market.
Aggressive Share Buyback Strategy
The company launched a $500 million share repurchase program in Q1 and repurchased $89.4 million worth of shares. As of the end of March, $434.6 million remains authorized for future repurchases, highlighting confidence in long-term shareholder value.
Selective Capital Investment and Project Pauses
In response to shifting economic conditions, Churchill Downs has paused certain non-essential developments like The Skye and Conservatory. However, capital investments aimed at enhancing the Kentucky Derby experience remain on schedule for completion by April 2026.
Outlook: Balancing Growth and Discipline
As market dynamics evolve, Churchill Downs continues to focus on growth opportunities while reinforcing financial discipline. Its Q1 2025 performance underscores the company’s adaptability in a competitive and fluctuating environment.
