National Arts Council and Lotteries and Gaming Board turn to short-form video content to encourage responsible gambling and help audiences recognise when to stop
Zimbabwe’s National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has partnered with the Lotteries and Gaming Board to launch a creative campaign aimed at promoting responsible gambling through short-form entertainment content.
The initiative, known as the Responsible Gambling Skit Challenge, invites content creators and skit makers to produce short videos highlighting the importance of maintaining control while gambling. The campaign is being conducted under the theme “Responsible Gambling, Know When to Stop!”
The initiative reflects the growing use of social media and digital storytelling as tools for public education. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional awareness campaigns, the organisers are encouraging creators to communicate responsible gambling messages through entertaining and easily shareable videos.
Short Videos Target Social Media Audiences
Participants in the challenge are expected to produce videos between one and two minutes long.
The format has been designed to fit the consumption habits of social media audiences, where short-form videos have become an increasingly important way of communicating information.
Creators are encouraged to use humour, storytelling and relatable situations to demonstrate responsible gambling practices. By combining entertainment with educational messages, the campaign aims to make responsible gambling information easier for audiences to understand and remember.
The participating creators are required to publish their skits on Facebook and Instagram, while tagging the official accounts of NACZ and the Lotteries and Gaming Board. Entries must also use the hashtag #ResponsibleGambling2026.
Knowing When to Stop
At the centre of the campaign is a simple message: gamblers should recognise their personal limits and know when it is time to stop.
The organisers want participants to communicate several important responsible gambling principles through their content.
These include understanding when to stop gambling, treating gambling as entertainment rather than a source of income, establishing personal limits and encouraging friends and family members to adopt safer gambling habits.
The campaign therefore places emphasis on personal responsibility while also recognising the role that communities can play in supporting healthier gambling behaviour.
Gambling Should Not Be Viewed as Income
Another important message behind the challenge is the distinction between gambling for entertainment and gambling as a means of making money.
Responsible gambling campaigns commonly encourage consumers to view gambling as a leisure activity rather than a guaranteed financial opportunity.
The Zimbabwean initiative uses creative content to reinforce this distinction, potentially helping audiences understand the financial risks associated with treating betting or gambling as a source of regular income.
The use of skits could make these messages particularly relatable because creators can present realistic situations involving spending limits, losing money or deciding when to walk away.
Creative Industry Supports Player Protection
The partnership between NACZ and the Lotteries and Gaming Board demonstrates how the creative sector can contribute to responsible gambling initiatives.
Artists, comedians and digital content creators have access to audiences that may not always engage with conventional public awareness campaigns.
By involving these creators, the organisers can present responsible gambling messages through familiar formats and platforms.
This approach may also allow the campaign to reach younger digital audiences who spend significant amounts of time consuming short-form video content on social media.
Engagement Forms Part of the Competition
The challenge also uses social media engagement as part of its competitive structure.
According to the campaign information, the competition will close on August 31, 2026, with the winning skit determined based on its level of views and engagement.
The winning creator will receive a US$1,000 prize, providing an additional incentive for participants to develop content that is both creative and capable of reaching a large audience.
The structure encourages creators to think about not only the responsible gambling message but also how effectively that message can be communicated to social media users.
Combining Entertainment With Education
The Responsible Gambling Skit Challenge represents an alternative approach to communicating player-protection messages.
Traditional responsible gambling campaigns can sometimes rely heavily on formal advertisements, written information and regulatory messaging. By contrast, the Zimbabwean initiative places storytelling and entertainment at the centre of the communication strategy.
Short skits can demonstrate everyday gambling situations and show how individuals can make safer decisions. They can also encourage viewers to discuss gambling behaviour with friends and family.
For the organisers, the goal is to make responsible gambling a more visible part of online conversations.
A Broader Push for Responsible Gambling
The initiative comes as regulators and industry stakeholders across Africa continue to place greater emphasis on responsible gambling and consumer protection.
As betting and gaming become increasingly accessible through digital platforms, public education has become an important component of efforts to encourage safer participation.
Zimbabwe’s collaboration between its arts and gambling authorities demonstrates how different sectors can work together to address these issues.
By combining the reach of social media creators with the regulatory expertise of the Lotteries and Gaming Board and the creative network of NACZ, the campaign aims to bring responsible gambling messages to a wider audience.
Ultimately, the Responsible Gambling Skit Challenge seeks to turn an important public-interest message into engaging digital content. With creators encouraged to use their creativity to promote the principle of “Know When to Stop,” Zimbabwe is exploring a more accessible way of bringing responsible gambling and player protection into everyday social media conversations.
