Buying a sportsbook platform is only one part of launching an iGaming business in Africa. The harder part is getting the operation around it right: market choice, acquisition, first deposits, payments, product, retention, tax and daily operations.

We recently reviewed 10 African markets while building The Africa iGaming Operator Playbook. A few things stood out.

Cheap acquisition can hide weak economics

Africa can look attractive from an acquisition point of view. But cheap registrations are not the same as a good business.

GeoPoll’s 2026 survey across six African betting markets found that 58% of active bettors surveyed spend less than $10 per month. At the same time, 55% bet at least weekly and 28% bet at least daily.

That changes what an operator should measure. CPA alone tells you very little. A better funnel is: acquisition cost -> registration -> first deposit -> first bet -> repeat deposit -> D30 funded player -> contribution.

If you can acquire players cheaply but struggle to convert deposits, retain them or control operating costs, the cheap CPA does not help much.

Africa is not one operating model

One of the easiest mistakes is building an ‘Africa setup’ and deploying it country by country.

The markets are too different. East African markets can be heavily mobile-money driven. Nigeria is much more bank-transfer and virtual-account driven. South Africa has a different payment, regulatory and product structure again.

Player behaviour changes too. GeoPoll found football was the main betting product for 67% of respondents overall, but South Africa was the major exception: casino led at 36%, while football was 29%. Kenya separately showed much stronger demand for crash-style products.

The same platform can serve these countries. The same configuration should not.

Payments, tax, product weighting, limits, acquisition channels and operations need to be set around the actual market.

Choose the platform around the operation

Operators often compare platforms using the easiest things to demonstrate: number of casino games, number of markets, frontend design and bonus features.

Those things matter. But they are not enough.

Before signing, an operator should also ask:

Can finance and support investigate payment issues without waiting for engineers?
Can the platform support the payment methods that dominate the target market?
Can tax rules change cleanly when regulation changes?
Can we measure acquisition through to first deposit and repeat deposit?
Can we launch market number two without rebuilding the operation?

Adding another 5,000 casino games will not fix a broken deposit funnel. A good platform should make the business easier to operate, not simply give the operator a bigger feature list.

Deposits and withdrawals are growth metrics

Payments are normally discussed as infrastructure. Operators should also look at them as commercial metrics.

A failed first deposit can waste acquisition spend before the player places a single bet. A poor withdrawal experience can damage trust after the operator has already paid to acquire and retain that player.

And where player transaction values are small, payment costs and operational exceptions become more visible in the P&L.

The useful dashboard is not simply ‘payments are online’. It is deposit success, first-deposit conversion, withdrawal time, unresolved transactions and repeat deposits.

Launch day is the start of the work

Going live gets attention. The first 90 days tell you whether the business actually works.

This is when operators should be watching first-deposit conversion, payment success, repeat deposits, withdrawal performance, product usage, bonus cost, support issues and retention by acquisition channel.

Scaling marketing before these numbers are stable can simply send more money into a broken funnel. The aim of the first few months should be to understand where revenue is being lost, fix the operation and only then push harder on acquisition.
