Balanced Gains Across Betting, Casino, and Lottery Sectors
France’s gambling market reached a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of €14 billion in 2024, marking a robust 3.5% year-on-year increase, according to new figures released by the country’s regulator, Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ). The milestone underscores France’s resilient and evolving gambling sector, buoyed by digital innovation and steady consumer engagement across verticals.
The lottery remained the dominant contributor, accounting for 52% of the total market GGR. Française des Jeux (FDJ), the national lottery operator, generated €7.3 billion in revenue, reflecting modest growth of 1.5%. The steady lottery performance was driven by continued interest in instant games and traditional draws, supported by FDJ’s expanding digital footprint.
Online Betting and Casino Segments Propel Expansion
The online sports betting sector recorded €2.4 billion in GGR, a notable rise of 7% compared to 2023. This growth is attributed to increased bettor engagement during global sporting events and enhanced user experiences through mobile platforms. ANJ data shows that online sports betting now commands 17% of the total gambling market—a testament to France’s rising appetite for digital wagering.
Online poker also delivered steady gains, with GGR rising to €442 million, reflecting a stable community of players and increasing tournament participation. Meanwhile, online casino gaming—which remains restricted in France—continues to attract regulatory discussions amid growing market interest.
A Sustainable and Regulated Future
The ANJ emphasized responsible gambling initiatives and tighter player protection measures as key pillars behind the industry’s stability. France’s regulatory model, balancing consumer protection with market competitiveness, has been cited in various European studies as a benchmark for sustainable gambling markets.
Looking ahead, industry analysts expect continued growth in France’s regulated online segments, particularly if discussions around expanding online casino offerings progress favorably under ANJ’s supervision.
