Revised Audit Guidelines to Streamline Oversight
The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has issued a formal clarification regarding recent changes to its audit procedures, signaling a proactive effort to enhance regulatory oversight while improving operational clarity for licensed operators. The updated framework, which governs how compliance audits and system reviews are conducted, is part of the MGA’s broader strategy to reinforce transparency, efficiency, and risk-based supervision within Malta’s internationally recognized iGaming jurisdiction.
According to the MGA’s statement, the revisions address procedural ambiguities and align auditing practices more closely with international best standards. The adjustments also clarify the responsibilities of approved auditors, outline timeframes for submission, and establish a clearer structure for operator-auditor engagements.
Key Changes Focus on Clarity and Compliance
One of the principal updates involves the removal of duplication between system audits and compliance audits, which previously led to overlapping assessments and confusion among stakeholders. Under the new guidelines, operators will benefit from a more streamlined audit process, reducing administrative burden while ensuring that all critical compliance checks are retained.
The MGA has also issued revised criteria for the approval and appointment of auditors, aiming to guarantee consistency in audit quality. Licensed operators are now explicitly required to engage auditors from the MGA’s Approved Audit Service Providers List, and the regulator has tightened rules around submission deadlines and notification of delays.
Regulator Reaffirms Commitment to Strong Governance
Ivan Camilleri, Chief Compliance Officer at the MGA, commented on the changes: “Our goal is to create a supervisory environment that is robust yet efficient. These clarifications ensure that both operators and auditors understand their roles, reducing uncertainty and strengthening Malta’s regulatory framework.”
The MGA’s move comes as European and global regulators place greater emphasis on risk management, anti-money laundering (AML) controls, and technical compliance in online gambling. The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Malta’s reputation as a leading and credible gaming hub, balancing industry competitiveness with stringent compliance.
Operators have been urged to familiarize themselves with the updated procedures and ensure timely alignment to avoid non-compliance penalties.
